At the same time, everybody knows that just because students are getting good grades does not mean they are learning. And it certainly doesn’t mean students are learning to love learning or to invest in learning personally.

Finally, the reason states give big standardized tests at the end of the year to monitor student learning is because they don’t trust the grades that teachers give students. They know those grades are often inflated, like much of the other data that come out of schools.
